United Nations Day 2020
The United Nations Day celebrates the ratification of the 1945 Charter, it wasn’t until 1948 that October 24th was named the official holiday. UN leaders say it meant to highlight the grave importance of sustainable development.
History of the United Nations Day
After the destruction of the World War II, the United Nations was established in 1945. The UN was established to prevent future wars and to bring back peace. Fifty governments gathered in San Franciso on April 25th and began drafting the UN Charter, which was adopted on June 25th and then officially took effect on the 24th of October. The mission to conserve world peace wasn’t easy at all. There was a Cold War between America and Soviet Union. Post-Cold war between 1988 and 2000, the number of Security Council was more than doubled and the peacekeeping budget expanded.
The United Nations as an organization is well known to think about everyone around the world. They participate in activities ranging from assistance in times of any disaster. They offer medical assistance to people, as well as providing clean water, food and places to rest and recover.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has ensured that the organization has set 17 goals which plans to meet by 2030 and all those goals are to create a better life for every person. The UN member states are 193 sovereign states that have equal representation in the UN General Assembly. The UN is the world’s largest intergovernmental organization.
United Nations Day Celebration World Wide
We can celebrate this day by getting to know about this great organization and the differences it makes in our lives. Some of the basic rights enjoyed by the people around the world are a result of the work done by the UN in collaboration with other countries. Additionally, celebrations are held around the world, some of them are as simple as lighting up bridges and buildings, others represent art form around the world and are used as part of an Art Installation. Usually, an annual concert is organized in the General Assembly Hall.
Roots Millennium School RMS Celebrates UN Day
As we know that United Nations Day is celebrated on 24th of October but, this year, the date was on Saturday, so we celebrated the United Nations Day at our School, RMS Oxbridge Campus, on 26th October, Monday. This day was celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm but with following all the proper SOP’s to make sure we’re safe from the pandemic(COVID19).
Being the senior most class of the campus, students from Grade 8 made their power point presentations to teach their juniors about the United Nations Day and the importance of diversity. The students were gathered in the activity room but there was proper social distance and all of them were wearing their masks.
My Personal Experience At RMS During Celebrations of United Nations Day
I was one of the students to present in front of my juniors and it was an honor telling them UN and Importance of Sustainable Goals. We had an interactive session about the SDGs where we brainstormed ideas on how can we may contribute to our community. After the presentations, there were some questions which were asked to the students about the United Nations Day and I am so glad that they knew all the answers.
In my opinion, the UN Day should be observed all around the member states of the UN because it is celebrated to commemorate the day that so many countries joined together to accept each other despite all cultural, religious and physical differences. To promote peace throughout the world.
It gives us the lesson to have peace around us and to be united. The UN Day is very important because it is on a mission to end hunger, UN has given women a voice and promotes human rights, it gives a lesson about cultural diversity, and it maintains worldwide peace and develops good relations among nations. The main purpose of United Nations Day is to foster cooperation between nations to solve economic, social, cultural and humanitarian international problems.

Great write up. Sharing your experiences with peers is encouraging for other peers . The topic chosen was an important one and there is a dire need to spread awareness about peace and importance of SDG 2030 .
A concise and well-written piece on the UN and the role this organisation plays in the world. Awareness of the world and the way it operates should be done on all levels and this piece is a good effort. Great work, do keep it up!
