Millennials have been participating and winning Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in The Queen`s Commonwealth Essay competition from last many years. This year one of our Gold Award Winners is Muhammad Dawood Atif of Grade VII, The Millennium Education Waterloo Campus, PWD Islamabad.

Let`s read the below story written by Dawood on Pandemic and why it’s crucial for upcoming generations to have known how about pandemics and how to survive them.

Topic: The year is 2050 and you’ve been asked to write about the Coronavirus pandemic for a museum. What story would you tell?

The year is 2050 and most of the people of the new generation is not informed about the Covid ‘19 pandemic which was discovered in 2019. It is crucial for the kids of this generation to know about this virus so they know how to survive if another pandemic like this breaks out.

 What was Coronavirus and when was it discovered?

Covid 19 (Corona Virus) was a pandemic which was discovered in Wuhan, China during December 2019 In just a few days time, hundreds of people were infected. After some days Wuhan was sealed by the government of China. No one was allowed in or out of the city. Despite all the precautions the government of China took, the virus had spread in whole of China. After a month or two it got uncontrollable in China and it started to spread all over the world, country by country.

How did it spread and what were the symptoms?

The virus used to spread if any two or more people are in close contact with each other (1 meter). People also got infected  when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.

This was a dangerous virus owing to the way how it used to spread but what made it more dangerous was the fact that mostly it did not show clear symptoms but the more common were the following

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Tiredness

Some of the serious symptoms were the following

  • Difficulty or shortness in breathing
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Loss of Speech

What were the precautions?

The first case of Covid 19 in Pakistan was reported on 26 February 2020 when I was 10 years old and studied in Grade five. As all the other government the government of Pakistan took the precautions. The schools, restaurants’, marriage halls, colleges, mall, parks and all others public places were closed. After the government did its part the people also started to follow the measures .People started to maintain social distance wore masks, used sanitizers, washed their hands, started to stay home etc.

How did Covid ‘19 change the lives of people?

Covid 19 had affected our daily life, business, the world’s economy, trade and movement. Most of the countries had slowed down their manufacturing of the products. The various industries and sectors were affected by the cause of this disease; these include the pharmaceuticals industry, solar power sector, tourism, Information and electronics industry. This virus created a significant knock-on effects on the daily life of citizens, as well as about the global economy. Covid also change many other things in healthcare, social life and the economy which are the following:

Healthcare

  • Challenges in the diagnosis, quarantine and treatment of suspected or confirmed cases
  • High burden of the functioning of the medical system
  • Patients with other disease and health problems were getting neglected.
  • Overload on doctors and other healthcare professionals, who were at a very high risk.
  • Overloading of medical shops.
  • Requirement for high protection.
  • Disruption of medical supply chain.

Economic

  • Slowed the manufacturing of essential goods.
  • Disrupted the supply chain of products
  • Losses in national and international business.
  • Poor cash flowed in the market.
  • Significant slowing down in the revenue growth.

Social

  • Service sector was not being able to provide their proper service.
  • Cancellation or postponement of large-scale sports and tournaments.
  • Avoidance of national and international travelling and cancellation of services.
  • Disrupted of celebration of cultural, religious and festive events
  • Undue stress among the population.
  • Social distancing started with peers and family members.
  • Closure of the hotels, restaurants and religious places.

How did Covid ‘19 end?

At the start of 2021 many countries made their vaccinations eg India , China , Russia , US but not all of them were working . At the start many people were scared of getting the vaccination but slowly and gradually people’s confidence grew and many people got vaccinated. The virus’s spread started to slow and at the end of 2027 the virus died after all the lives it took .
